Obsqure is a Tunisian music composer, producer and DJ residing in Doha, Qatar. By demonstrating the omnipresent lingering of a ‘musical world’, Obsqure often creates work using creative sound tactics, but these are never permissive. Play is a serious matter: during the creation, different rules apply than in everyday life and even everyday objects undergo transubstantiation.
His artworks demonstrate how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of global cultural interaction over the latter half of the twentieth century. It challenges the binaries we continually reconstruct between self and other, between our own ‘cannibal’ and ‘civilized’ selves. In a search for new methods to ‘read the city’ and please the listener, he focuses on the idea of ‘public space ‘and ‘world sounds’ and more specifically on spaces where anyone can do anything at any given moment: the non-private space, the non-privately owned space, space that is economically uninteresting.
His works are characterized by the use of everyday sounds in an atmosphere of an open mind mentality in which recognition plays an important role. By taking daily life instruments as subject matter, his works could be loosely described as cinematic electronica, but his roots are in Trip hop, ambient and chillout. His compositions are a fusion of live instrumentation and electronic production.
His new album Tabula Rasa, available from Bandcamp, is described as follows:
“Tabula Rasa, Blank Slate from Obsqure is a Trip-hop / Down-tempo album created with both modern and oriental various instruments. In terms of sound, the artist invites us on a sonic journey with a weird, disturbing and oriental atmosphere.
On a traditional altogether building , the album starts quietly with just enough sophistication with Hijaz to install an oriental atmosphere with Eastern electro-jazz accents. The first three tracks elapsed, the compositions are gaining depth and pleasure grows. Hijaz and Rabbath beautifully introduce Cloud Chaser, the summit of this album, the track that could definitely be on a compilation somewhere between Massive Attack and Archive without having to blush at the comparison. It is dynamic, catchy, melodic and rich at the same time and above all it’s fun! Do not be surprised to nod, shake the shoulders or the beat with your foot while smiling.”
