Maria Katre was raised listening to jazz and classic soul and was an active member of chorus, concert and marching bands. While in high school she taught herself to play tuba and bass drum. She says, “I loved a good challenge and wanted to play instruments that girls typically didn’t play. It was a very fulfilling experience to say the least. From that experience, I learned that every instrument in a band is essential in creating one sound. When everyone is on one accord, I believe the ultimate goal has been reached by painting a harmonious picture for the listeners.”
Venturing away from music after high school was just what she needed to remind her where her heart truly was. “I thought I was supposed to be doing something else other than music. I thought that since that’s all I knew, maybe it was time for me to try another avenue… Our psyche can trick us at times. I was trying to find myself instead of creating myself.” After two university transfers, and two concentration changes she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast/Journalism from Florida A&M University. After graduation, Maria relocated to L.A. to pursue an acting career and dove directly into background acting to gain exposure and experience.
After three years of booking a few commercial, TV, and print jobs; she still felt like something was missing from her life and it revealed itself to her one night. “I remember feeling incomplete and I didn’t know why…feeling like I had no purpose in life for some reason. I continued to meditate on what made my soul and spirit truly happy and the answer became evident to me…I needed to return to my first love which was music. I hadn’t read music in years nor played any of my instruments. I dabbled with a small keyboard I had at the time to keep my fingers moving but that was about it. Just like anything, not practicing for so long you lose your capabilities. I knew I had to return to the basics in order to regain the fundamentals…” She enrolled in Los Angeles City College’s music academy and spent a total of 8 semesters there starting from the beginning with classical to jazz. “I devoted my time around my audition schedule and encompassed myself in everything related to music.
Maria has released three singles and is currently working on an EP to be released in 2017. She describes her single Smile as follows: I wrote the melody to smile ironically three years ago and put it away in my lyric book. I revisited this song when I was working with pianist/producer Dwayne Tillman. I sang the first verse idea of what I had and he really liked it. I tend to write from experience and love connecting inspirational lyrics to my music. We recorded the song in April, in Atlanta GA. The song was released September 25th and has been getting airplay all the way in London. Smile is a feel good song for anyone. I would say my genre’s are a melting pot of jazz, neo-soul, classic rock, funk and r&b. I’m currently working on an EP that is to be released Summer 2017

Breeze , formed in 1997, creates improvisational music; all of their music is played and recorded live. Breeze says of their music: ‘We see this music as contemporary funk-jazz outfit and we try not to re-do the same things as this genre has produced over forty years. We care a lot about getting the music lift off and getting to fly, as you can hear.’
Released in 2012, their album Liquorice consists of fifteen tracks, three of which are featured below. These include Last Night, Liquorice, and Tomorrow. Of their music Breeze writes:
‘The biggest deal of the music came from group improvisation (especially Liquorice, which is almost 90% the version we played the first time – as an improvisation.) We just had to get down to 4-5 minutes and arranged it. Breeze is a rather organized band, each rehearsal was cut when something interesting happens, and our piano player (Jürgen) uploaded this on our personal server, so when we meet again, we have talked beforehand, what could be used to producing the next song. this is a very effective way to work.
Last night was a composition from the start. Maja brought this one, half-finished, when she got into Breeze. We found it was too beautiful so we re-arranged & finished this one. Tomorrow is an old Breeze-classic, we played it for years. We care alot about the right arrangements, even if it takes some time. The whole music here was recorded in our own rehearsal room at Cologne. This was possible, cause our piano player is also a very good recording engineer. He also mixed and mastered the whole album.”
The members of Breeze are as follows:
Jürgen Weber: piano, keyborads, recording & engineering
Maja Szydlowska (now: Maja Röth): vocals
Stefan Schwinden: bass, composer
Christian Barthold: guitar, theremin, mikrokorg, kalimba, atmo-vocals through effects), electronics, composer
Martin Schubert: drums & percussion.
The album Liquorice is available on Amazon and ITUNES!

“My album is a story of triumph, of letting go of all the uncertainty in my head and learning to walk the path of my own heart. “Sincerely” is about realizing how much better this world would be if we all loved ourselves, if we weren’t afraid of being vulnerable and honest. It doesn’t matter who’s president or what technology we invent or what extremists we destroy, the only thing I know is this: There will never be peace if we do not all love ourselves.”
